Between Life & Existence
Between Life & Existence is a visual exploration of internal reflections through ancient Balinese ceremonies. It delves into spirituality, culture, and human connection, revealing moments of compassion, solace, and my inner restlessness along the way.
Bali’s spirituality infuses every aspect of life—its culture, daily practices, and the profound connections people have with the world around them. I spent 16 days on the Island of Spirits during a rare convergence of significant ceremonies—Galungan, Kuningan, Melasti, Nyepi, Ngaben, and Mapepada—unfolding one after another, an occurrence that hadn't happened in decades.
Initially, I was drawn to the beauty of these spiritual events—the vibrant colors, traditional attire, and rhythmic rituals. Yet, beneath the surface, I discovered something more profound: a simplicity, grace, and quiet strength in how the Balinese people engaged with their environment. Their approach to life—simple acts of devotion imbued with calmness and reverence was in stark contrast to my inner turmoil. In these moments of stillness, as I wrestled with uncertainty and self-doubt, I began to see reflections of my challenges in their quiet resilience.
Throughout this time, I witnessed collective joy, tenderness, and death—the balancing acts between life and existence, an acceptance of both the beauty and the pain of being. I realized how universal these emotions are. The love, faith, kindness, and despair we carry as humans resonate everywhere. While unique and deeply rooted in Balinese culture, these traditions spoke to something I recognized in myself and others.
